Physical Education

We recognise the importance PE plays in our school and the curriculum and are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education. Our vision is to ensure pupils and adults experience growth and have a sense of self-worth, the confidence to be who they are and the resilience to persevere and overcome challenges. We aim for all members of our school community to feel inspired and be inspiring, making a positive contribution to the life of others.

Aims of our PE Curriculum

At Grendon Underwood School we recognise the importance PE plays in the curriculum and are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education. We believe every child and young person has the right to be active, to benefit from being active in a safe, positive and trusted environment, and to have an equal chance to achieve their potential.

The aim of our PE program is to develop children's basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

PE lessons encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills. These skills are embedded in the heart of our planning.

Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Teaching and Learning

Our PE lessons are planned,by S4A PE specialists which aligns with our core values, our whole child approach to PE and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. S4A PE is planned so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.

As a member of  IGNIS Sports Partnership, we enter as many inter-school festivals and competitions as possible. Taking part in the competitions allows pupils to play against teams from other schools. These events can range from sport specific tournaments: hockey, football, tag rugby for our older pupils, multi-skill festivals for KS1 children and taster sessions, girl-only activities and friendly events for our less experienced pupils. IGNIS also offer support for our Sports Lead and all staff through regular meetings and training courses.

In addition to PE and school sport, pupils will have the opportunity to experience school residential trips. A range of age appropriate experiences across the school that allow the children and adults to focus on outdoor activities and team building alongside personal challenges in different surroundings. These are often the highlight of a pupil’s year, and what they remember with extreme fondness when moving to their next school.

We will send out information and details of local sports clubs, initiatives and holiday activities that may be of interest to you.
