Home Learning and Supporting Learning

From September, we have changed our home learning policy.   Many studies, including one by Hull University, found that homework has little or no positive benefit for the academic achievement of children of primary school age.  The study concluded that if children read regularly with their parents/carers, there is some evidence that this has a positive impact, as well as providing enjoyment, but the quality of interaction may be more important than the quantity.  Therefore, daily reading and times timetables will be our only home learning focus.  All children will be expected to read daily and children from Years 2 to Year 6 will be expected to complete 5 sessions on Times Table Rock Stars. (Year 2 starts in October).

For children who struggle to complete this at home, we will facilitate an opportunity for them to complete this for 20 minutes on a Thursday lunchtime.

See a list of recommended websites for you to use, should you wish to do further learning with your child. Curriculum maps inform you about what the children are learning – these could be used to support your children further.

Getting involved in your child’s education, even in the simplest way, will have a positive impact on their achievements. Often, the more supported a child feels at home, the more effectively she or he will learn at school.

Helping your child get the best out of school

Celebrating your child’s achievements and getting involved in their school life can help boost their confidence. Supporting them with life-skills, such as basic organisation and time management skills, so they are not overwhelmed with projects or homework, will also help them. If you have any concerns about your child’s achievements or progress, please contact their class teacher.

We have put together a selection of websites that you may find useful when supporting your child's learning at home.  If you know of any websites of apps that you enjoy using with your children, we would love to hear your recommendations.
