Grendon Underwood's school tag rugby team

1st June
They travelled to Abingdon for the Thames Valley games. The squad had recently won an Aylesbury Vale tournament. Rallied by team coach Bob Hardman, who spoke of our high chances spirits were soaring. We set off from the Little Chef at 8:30am to arrive and warm up for a match at 10:30. We were all nervous for our first game. 10 -10 was the final score; good for a first game. Bob told us to stay in the shade and drink lots. So it continued until the last game, which was nearly 6 hours later. The team had seen some marvellous sportsmanship in all the surrounding sports, captain Holly boosted team morale so we approached the last game positively which really showed in the team's performance and reflected in the score 7 - 8 one of our two wins. Unfortunately we did not have enough points to qualify. (Us vs. South Oxford 10-10 draw, us vs. South Bucks 4-6 win, us vs. Slough 8-6 loss, us vs. Reading 8-7 win 14 in total.) Most went home agreeing that it had been enjoyable day despite the fact we had not finalised.

Rugby Report

April 8th
On Thursday April the 8th a team of 25 Year 6 children travelled to Aylesbury to participate in a Tag Rugby tournament at Aylesbury Rugby Club. Two teams were entered, A and B, carefully chosen by Mrs. Martindale, the Year 6 teacher.

Two professional Rugby players from the Wasps team made an appearance later on in the day. They offered autographs to their loyal fans.

All the teams were of a high standard but sadly Grendon B team were knocked out of the competition before the semi final.

On a higher note Grendon A pushed their way right to the finals against Whitchurch and a gruelling match took place with the very close score of Grendon 13, Whitchurch 12. A trophy was awarded and the winners photo was taken.

Now Grendon qualify to go through to the main Thames Valley competition which is being held on the 1st of June in Abingdon.

Hockey Tournament

March 23rd
On Saturday the 23rd of March, the first Saturday of the Easter Holidays, Grendon Underwood Hockey Club went to a hockey tournament at Meadowcroft Astroturf.

We played 4 games, won1, drew 2, and lost 1, then we played 1 follow-up game which we also lost, although all scores were very close.

However, we still enjoyed the day and the experience was great. We drew 7th place and we are proud of our performances.

Mrs Martindale who came to support us said, "Although they came 7th they played exceptionally well considering it was one of their first games on Astroturf".  We are all thankful to Mrs Blackburn and Mrs Martindale for taking us because we learnt lots of new hockey skills and had a good time.

2001 proved a great year for the school in sporting events . . .

Grendon Underwood's Annual Sports Day
July 2001

What a fantastic day had by all!  The atmosphere was one of joy and anticipation.  We were blessed with superb weather and as a result the school as a whole managed to have a brilliant time.

Many sporting events took place, such as long jump and shot put.  The children put in 110% for their teams but at the same time managed to have a lot of fun with their friends and family.

It was great to see the children enjoying themselves so much. It certainly added to the whole vibe of the day!  The staff also managed to have a great time, not only was it a chance for us to enjoy the lovely sunshine but it also enabled us to see how well our pupils were doing in the various events that were taking place.  The staff would like to say how very proud they were of their classes.  Well done!

Thanks to ALL the members of staff who put in so much effort to make this day the success that it was.  Not only does this show great team work but it also shows how much effort we put into the sporting curriculum here at Grendon.

Also, many thanks to all the parents who came to this joyous event  and help make it the success that it was.  We hope that Grendon Underwood's 2002 Sports Day will be just as successful as the last one.
