During the spring term of 1003, the school took part in Multicultural week that was organised by Miss Sibun. The intention of the week was to educate children about other countries, the way everyday life is lived is in these countries and to learn of the various faiths, cultures and religions these countries have.
Here is a list of what each class decided to look at during this enthralling week.
- Reception and Mrs Tutton: France
- Year 1and Mrs Fallaize: South Africa
- Year 2 and Miss Sibun: Mexico
- 3A and Miss Ali: Egypt
- 3W and Miss Ward: Australia
- 40 and Mrs Oliver: America
- 4J and Mrs Jeffery: Crete
- Year 5, Miss Hollins and Mr Williams: China
- 6N and Mrs Nicholl India
- 6M and Mrs Martindale: Japan
As you can see, the school managed to cover many countries!
The children enjoyed this week immensely. They learnt many things about their chosen country such as:
- The food eaten
- Clothes worn
- Religions practised in these countries
- Famous monuments these countries own
- Look at the National Flags
- How special celebrations are celebrated and practised, and why
- A look at the country’s past
- How these countries differ from the United Kingdom
The children learnt many exciting things. Many classes had food testing days where they tried out traditional meals from these countries. Classes watched videos and looked at magazines, they were given the opportunity to design clothes and make their own travel leaflets for their countries.
The school also listened to music from these countries in assembly each day. The reaction of the children when hearing these different styles of music was very amusing! As a result they also learnt about other musical instruments that we don’t see much of in this country, such as the “Sitar” which is played in India or the “dijaree doo” that is used in Australia.
The ICT room was also very busy during this week as many classes came in and used the internet to do searches about their countries. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to use all the skills they have learnt from their normal ICT sessions at school. There was lots of cutting and pasting going on, reports being written with pictures bring inserted into the documents, we had posters being designed and printed off as well as class recipe books being put to together!
All in all, the whole school had a very enjoyable week. They learnt many exciting things about not only their own chosen country but of the countries of the other classes.
Thank you to all the staff, LSA’s and parent helpers for making this week such a success for the children and a special thank you to Miss Sibun from everyone, for organising such a memorable and interesting week!
